Making a real "Bouquet" takes about 6 weeks. "Bouquet" helps satisfy the desire to bring natural wildness into the home or workspace. The "Bouquets" series is based on biophilic design, which reflects the human desire to connect with nature. By combining this with CNC machining, a unique hand forming process was developed that allows real flowers to be pressed into a variety of 3D vase-like shapes. "Bouquet" was created by exploring different traditional artisanal molding techniques. She took the flower press to her studio in South London, where it was deconstructed to explore a new way of applying the traditional 2D craft technique of pressing flowers. Hollow and vase-like, the preserved works extend the vibrancy and supple forms of purple statice or burgundy kangaroo paw from approximately ten days to upwards of five years.Īs Shannon herself writes on her website, it all started with a dirty, old wooden flower press that she found for £1 on a 'car boot' (a kind of flea market) in Wimbledon.

This now lifelong inclination emerges in Bouquet, her series of biophilic sculptures comprised of dozens of flowers dried and pressed into intricately constructed mesh. Immersed in the flora of Cape Town’s Table Mountain as a child, artist Shannon Clegg has always had an affinity for unembellished, humble materials, particularly those harvested naturally and shaped into innovative forms.
